COURSE DEVELOPMENT:
Psychology 418:
Theories of Learning (Fall 2009).
Developed and prepared lectures and coursework for reformatted theories of
learning course that represents historical and modern theories of learning
applicable to both basic and applied psychology graduate students.
Psychology 263:
Physiological Psychology.
Developed and prepared lectures and coursework for reformatted physiological
psychology/neuroscience course. Spring, 2009.
Graduate Seminar
in Experimental Analysis of behavior (Psych 462). Spring, 2009.
The course examines the
roles of consequences and the scheduling of consequences on acquisition,
maintenance and structure of behavior in human and nonhuman organisms. The
course emphasizes both the mechanisms and theories surrounding how consequences
select and shape behavior, with an emphasis on methodology, measurement and
quantification of behavior. Topics include the historical beginnings of
experimental analysis of behavior, classical conditioning, scheduling of
reinforcers, conditioned reinforcement, stimulus control, choice, molecular
determinants of behavior, mathematical models of behavior, complex response
units, and dynamic behavior.
Psychology 111: Introductory Psychology. 2007-2009. With team of psychologists from the Department of Psychology, developed a specialized small class within a large course program of introductory psychology for major freshman. Specialized lectures include a behavior measurement activity, behavior analysis lecture, and course materials evaluations.

Developed a course for students to learn and use operant conditioning skills including optimal foraging and the matching law to examine the effects of DA agonists on social status, matching and social interactions.
Laboratory in Operant Conditioning: The Zoo as a learning laboratory. 2001-2002. Developed a course for students to learn and use operant conditioning skills to provide training and environmental enrichment at a local zoo. Project received two years of funding from the International Foundation for Ethical Research ($30,000). Evaluation project for Foundations of Inquiry: 2000-2001. Assisted in the development of the course evaluations for FOI, and consulted the Program Implementation Committee assessment team regarding data collection, design of the assessment, and uses and interpretations of the data.
Examination of Readability of Consent forms used in the Psychology Subject Pool for Honors Introductory Psychology. 2000. Assisted the students in developing an alternative, more readable consent form which was then compared to the standardized, more legal form. The class then surveyed a large lecture class by having them read either the standardized or alternative consent form, and gave a short quiz on the content of the form (held constant for both). The students then analyzed the data and presented the results of their research at the Undergraduate Research Conference.
Random Acts of Kindness Project for Honors Introductory Psychology and Senior Seminar. 1999. Developed a random acts of kindness project in which each student had to engage in 10 random acts of kindness. Recipients of the random acts were polled, and the students were required to write a pre-act and post-act reaction paper outlining their expectations and reactions to the random acts of kindness.
Learning Rat
laboratory. 1998-2002. Developed an
animal operant laboratory for use in conjunction with this course. Students were
assigned a rat, and required to teach the rat a series of 8 different laboratory
exercises. Activities were coordinated in conjunction with topics/activities
that occurred in the classroom. Students completed the series of 8 labs, and
then an original lab of their own design, over a 12 week period.
Self-Management Project for Honors Introductory Psychology: Fall, 1998. Developed a self-management project used as part of a laboratory experience in the honors introductory psychology course. Students developed individual self-management goals, collected baseline data, implemented an intervention, and evaluated their progress. Data for the class was then presented at the Undergraduate Research Symposium.
Psychology 110:
Explaining Human Behavior:
Developed lecture and laboratory series which redefined how introductory
psychology was taught in the Psychology Department. Included on-line testing,
use of net forum for essays, and integrated laboratory experiences through
breakout sessions in a large lecture class. Fall, 1999. IDS 100 Foundations of Inquiry: Participated in the development of the freshman seminar course as part of Pilot Implementation program, Fall, 1996 through the current revision. Course involved teaching segments on an introduction to the university, ethics, argumentation, sciences and social sciences, environment, gender, and relativism.
