Assignment: Practice Teaching
For English 295, 296, and 297
Professor Bob Broad, Department of English, Illinois State
University
As an important part of this course, you will teach an abbreviated English
class. Please follow these guidelines and requirements:
- Assign your "students" (your peers and your professor) homework in advance of teaching
your lesson (i.e., during the class meeting preceding your practice teaching
date)
- In the three minutes preceding your practice teaching, present
your peers and your professor with copies of a one-page lesson plan that describes the
context, rationale, and activities for this lesson, as well as your plans
for evaluating the success of your teaching and of your students' learning
(for more guidance see Assignment: Teaching
Materials)
- Teach the aspect(s) of English emphasized in the course you are
taking with Prof. Broad: writing for Eng. 297, literature for Eng.
296, or both for Eng. 295
- You will teach for exactly twenty minutes. Professor Broad will
signal the start and end of your class. To prepare for teaching,
exit the classroom, click your heels together three times while chanting
"There's no job like teaching English," and then return to the
classroom. Meanwhile, we will have transformed ourselves into your
students. Greet us loudly and warmly, and start your
lesson.
- Provide your students with a powerful and exciting opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge of the English language arts
(for guidance see the NCTE/IRA Standards
for the English Language Arts)
- In the five minutes following your practice teaching, write
your reflections on your just-finished teaching experience and
post them on our course
Webboard. Meanwhile, your "students" (your professor and
your peers) will write to you about their experiences learning from
and with you. At the end of the class, you will be invited to tell the
group what you appreciated and valued most in your teaching
(and why) and
what you would do differently next time (and why).
- Practice teaching should be enjoyable, exciting, creative, challenging,
and a little scary. Prof. Broad invites you to meet with him in advance of
your practice teaching to bounce ideas off him and get his feedback on your
plans for practice teaching.
- Prof. Broad's evaluation of your practice teaching is figured into your
class participation grade for this course.
