Introduction

The Program of Excellence in Neuroscience and Behavior (POENB) at Illinois State University brings together twelve faculty from four departments (Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Philosophy and Psychology) and the Central Illinois Neuroscience Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting medical research and education. These faculty have well established, extramurally funded and collaborative research projects across a broad spectrum in neuroscience and behavior. The long-term goal of POENB is a formal program in Neuroscience and Behavior. As a first step, POENB establishes two Scholar-Educator postdoctoral positions offering unique research opportunities in the fields of behavioral neuroscience, preclinical neuroscience, behavioral ecology, ecological physiology, immunology, neurochemistry and analytical chemistry.. These positions are funded by the College of Arts and Sciences at ISU and by grant support of participating faculty.

POENB Postdoctoral Program in Neuroscience and Behavior

The immediate aim of the Program of Excellence is to support two postdoctoral fellowships. Adopting a Scholar-Educator model, the postdoctoral associate will receive mentored training in the two primary activities of an academic scientist, research and teaching. These two-year fellowships are especially designed for individuals with strong interests in combining research and education training at the postdoctoral level and in interdisciplinary research bridging neuroscience and behavior. Responsibilities include developing an independent research program with a POENB faculty sponsor, collaborating on research with POENB faculty and undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. students, and mentored teaching of one course per year. For details see advertisement, research interestes of participating faculty research interests, application information, or e-mail us.

Program in Neuroscience and Behavior at ISU

The long-term objective of POENB to establish a distinctive, interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience and Behavior. The specific goals of this new program are:

1) supporting primary research in Neuroscience and Behavior.

2) forstering collaborative research in Neuroscience and Behavior,

3) enhancing the potential for external funding at ISU through novel collaborative arrangements involving faculty affiliated with the program,

4) enhancing the research experience for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and

5) preparing new faculty members for careers in the field of neuroscience and behavior by combining traditional research training with mentored teaching in the classroom.
