Welcome to Geography 315

SEMINAR IN GEOGRAPHY

Professor Michael D. Sublett

All Geography majors must complete Seminar in Geography in order to graduate from Illinois State University.  Students must have passed Doing Geography (Geography 204), passed or be concurrently enrolled in Cartography (Geography 300) and Geographic Information Systems (Geography 303), and completed 90 or more semester hours to enroll for Seminar.  Only those students intending to graduate in the same calendar year as they take Seminar should enroll.  In other words, a student taking Seminar in Spring 2012 should be planning to graduate in August of 2012 or in December 2012.  We will make an exception for Geography Teacher Education majors who are going to be student teaching in Spring 2013.

The Seminar course is a prerequisite for the internship in Geography (Geography 398.01) and serves, for many students, as a transition point between the academic environment of the University and the world of work.  Career-preparation issues absorb considerable time in class.  All students must create an acceptable one-page resume.  Guests visit the class periodically to provide personal stories and advice on career-related topics.  Since 2003, Seminar students have presented the results of a Senior Field Problem as a part of the course requirements.
