Position Title: Tourism Facilitator
Salary: $35,800 or more, depending on qualifications
Responsibilities: Serve a variety of functions within the State's official travel and tourism promotion office. Conduct workshops to help employees of local convention and visitor bureaus develop their communication skills. Work with motels, hotels, restaurants, and attractions to help them improve their public images, to include providing advice on their Websites. Support educational institutions by making presentations about the industry. Field questions coming into the Bureau's tourism hotline (at least one day per week). Assist the Bureau Director as assigned.
Requirements: Successful applicant must have a minor, major, or master's in tourism or a related field (like Geography). Courses in oral communication, writing, history, geography, and business very helpful. Bring a clean sample of recent writing to the interview. Outgoing personality is a must, as is a strong motivation to succeed.
Other: The Bureau office staff numbers about thirty souls at present and will likely remain at this level. Most employees have been on board for several years, and all seem to appreciate the family nature of the interpersonal relationships within the office. Employees enjoy all the benefits of state employment such as excellent health and other insurance coverage, paid vacation, and numerous paid holidays. Because of the nature of the tourism business, however, some office personnel must be on duty during official holidays. We use a rotational system to assure fairness in these assignments. A Tourism Facilitator attends at least three major travel/tourism conferences annually, including the national conference of state bureaus. Living conditions in the state capital are relatively expensive, but more affordable housing is available in nearby small communities. Recreational amenities in the area of the capital are outstanding.
