Position Titles: 9th-12th Grade Social Studies Teachers
Salary (nine month contract): Competitive but varies by city, from $40,000 to $50,000. Summer teaching, with suitable compensation, is a possibility.
Responsibilities: Teach array of social studies subjects, including history and geography, at inner-city schools in a metro area of the United States. Big City Teachers, Inc. recruits and signs teacher to initial contract. Then the teacher becomes the employee of a particular city's public school district.
Requirements: B.S. (with valid teaching certificate) in a social studies discipline, with a minimum of certification in geography and history. Successful candidate must be ready for the substantial challenges of inner city schools: disadvantaged students, sometimes disinterested or disconnected parents, commuting to work, school neighborhood decline, disciplinary issues, politics, etc. Youthful energy and an enthusiastic approach to the educational process will resonate well with recruiter and school officials. All cities in the Big City realm place a high emphasis on student literacy. Bring clean sample of recent lesson plan to the screening interview. Coaching is an extra duty and duly compensated. Non-sports extracurricular work is also available and compensated.
Other: Experience with urban schools (such as field trips to visit such schools) will be a plus. All cities in the Big City network have great cultural attractions and big-league professional sports teams. Additional coursework and advanced degrees are available to teachers at metropolitan public and private universities. All school districts for which Big City recruits will compensate in-service teachers for classes completed, with an A or B grade. Teachers must have completed at least one year in the system before taking such classes.
