Position Title: Coordinator of Volunteers and Trails
Salary (twelve month contract): $35,800 (B.S./B.A.) $40,650 (M.S./M.A.)
Responsibilities: Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers of all ages to assist in various Forest activities like staffing the Visitor Center, conducting the Junior Ranger Program, building and maintaining trails, and presenting nature talks around evening campfires. Coordinate repairs to existing trails and construction of new recreational trails in the Forest. Volunteers work at all seasons, as does the Coordinator.
Requirements: B.S./B.A. in a natural resources field (Ecology, Geography, Recreation). Prefer master's degree. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Bring clean sample of recent written work to first interview. Valid driver's license. Must enjoy dealing with people. Must be able to work in rustic settings, sometimes outdoors under poor weather conditions. Back country hiking and camping are necessary. Internship in similar setting will be helpful. Must possess valid CPR certification or obtain during the six-month probationary period. GPS and GIS skills would be a plus for candidate. Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools is critical, but training is available once a Forest Service employee.
Other: Coordinator works out of the Ranger District Headquarters, located in the Front Range near the 10,000 foot altitude level. The Fremont contains over 600,000 acres and many peaks topping 13,000 feet. Three major downhill ski areas operate within Forest boundaries. Permanent employees may occupy, for a modest charge, one of the winterized cabins within the Forest. Schools in the area are crowded but adequate.
