Model United Nations

The UNA-USA Model United Nations has a long tradition of preparing young people for global leadership through study and discussion of multi-lateral issues. Model UN is based on authentic simulations of the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, and other regional organizations and world conferences. It helps bring the UN to life for some 200,000 high school and college students.

Here in McLean County, the preparation of young people for the challenges of living in a global community are taken very seriously. Our UNA chapter has an active relationship with local Model United Nations Teams. Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University both have active Model UN teams who collaborate with McLean County UNA. Every year after returning from their Model UN experiences, these students come together at a chapter meeting to share their experiences and offer ideas for the next year's simulation.

Faculty advisors for both teams have been very active in McLean County UNA as well. Robert G. Leh was responsible for taking Illinois Wesleyan students to the Model UN in New York for a number of years; he is succeeded by the current faculty advisor Frank Boyd. Joel Brooks, also a member of the local UNA, was his counter part at Illinois State University. He has since passed on this honor to Janie Leatherman.
