Psychoanalytic Theory in English Studies
Assignments and Requirements

Fall 2002

Course Requirements:

The first two thirds of the course will be run in a lecture/discussion format. You are expected to do the readings and come prepared to raise questions and participate in the discussions. I expect to spend a good bit of time unpacking the texts--that is, doing close readings.

The second, more applied section of the course will change to a seminar, with participants making presentations based on psychoanalytically informed books that pertain specifically to their areas of interest. For instance, a person interested in composition theory might read and report on Mark Bracher's The Writing Cure, a person interested in race theory, Anne Anlin Cheng's The Melancholy of Race, or queer theory, Tim Dean's Beyond Sexuality. Since psychoanalysis has been taken up by so many disciplines, the possibilities are quite open. As you will note on the calendar, these later classes will be dedicated to specific areas of English Studies, and we will have common readings in that area so that we can discuss projects knowledgeably and help each other. In a perfect world, your interests will be evenly distributed among the various areas. But if that proves not to be the case,  we might generate interest groups who will present together. We'll figure all that out when we meet.

Grades will be based on the quality of your class participation, presentation, and final seminar paper.
