Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to provide students with a working knowledge and vocabulary of critical theories so that they will be able put them to use in their approaches to the study of children's literature and culture. We will be working reciprocally—from children’s text to theoretical text and back again. Readings will include primary theoretical and philosophical texts, as well as applied theoretical discussions of children’s books and poetry. Particular attention will be paid to recent innovations in queer theory. This course assumes that the student is familiar with the following children's and adolescent novels: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Peter Pan, The Secret Garden, Mary Poppins, Charlotte's Web, Tangerine, and The Chocolate War.

Required Texts:

The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism
Egoff, Only Connect, 3rd edition
Hunt, Understanding Children's Literature
Silverman, The Subject of Semiotics
Critical readings on reserve at Milner
