Course Description:
This course is an introduction to critical theories in children’s and young adult literature. We will discuss theoretical issues that have influenced the study of children’s and young adult literature, and explore the ways in which those theories have had uptake in scholarly studies and research in the field. Students will be expected to have read Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Peter Pan, The Arrival, The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963: A Novel, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, and The Mostly True Diary of a Part-Time Indian prior to the start of class.

The Routledge Companion to Children’s Literature, edited by David Rudd, Routledge 2010

*Other readings will be made available electronically.

**All students will be required to read and review a critical text of children’s literature criticism of their choice.
