Course Description

  From the ISU catalog:

Examines current scholarship in the teaching of literature at the secondary level; integrates theories of teaching literature with teaching practice.

 From our discussions:

In addition to being a course specifically directed toward the teaching of literature, this course serves as an introduction to becoming an English teacher in junior high and high school. As a result, it bears the weight of being an entry point to your thinking about issues such as classroom management, curricular decision-making, how you are going to locate and practice your authority in the classroom, and what you are going to do with the time you have with your students. We will stress culturally relevant pedagogies as well as literatures as we address these issues together, with the ultimate goal of creating a blueprint for the kind of teaching practice that accords with both your personal strengths and your beliefs about the teaching of English.
