  1. Iranian revolution -- the Shaw of Iran, Khomeini, establishment of Iran as an Islamic State

People's Century: God Fights Back

This is a VHS tape.  The Iran segment is the first one after the introductory stuff at the beginning of the tape.  About 7 or 8 minutes long.  Other parts of the tape are quite interesting and relevant, but we did not view those.  The parts we did not use include information about Jerry Falwell and the Christian Right, the ties between the Christian Right and the Republican Party, Islamic revolts in Egypt and Algeria (including scenes showing the assassination of President Sadat of Egypt).  In other words, it's about activist fundamentalism in Christianity and Islam, prior to al Quaeda.

  1. The traditionalist Sheikh Abbas from Egypt's ancient Islamic university

    Frontline: Muslims   Chapter 2
  2. Ayatollah Tehrani from Iran talks about the role of women in traditional Islam, and about some practices, such as cleansing before prayer.  Although he is an Ayatollah in the Iranian Islamic state, he is a moderate, and is representing fairly traditional views.  His wife is a philosophy professor.

    Frontline: Muslims    Chapter 3
  3. The traditional Malaysian Imam, Rahman, who runs tourist cabins and leads the island's Muslims in prayer, and is tolerant of Western tourists.  Also, a traditional Malaysian Muslim woman, Dr. Siraj, a physician who declares that women are born free under Islam.

Frontline: Muslims    Chapters 4 and 5
  4. Although we did not view this chapter, you might want to look at it for reference if you are looking for more information about liberal reformers in Islam: there is a chapter about a Malaysian woman, Mutalib, who seeks a divorce from her husband because he married another woman without telling her and because he hit her.  She has trouble with the shariah court system, and the spokesperson for the court represents a very traditionalist point of view.  She ends up getting involved with a liberal reform group called Sisters in Islam.

    Frontline: Muslims    Chapter 7
  5. Fundamentalist Islam in northern Nigeria establishes a Wahhabist version of sharia law.

    Frontline: Muslims    Chapter 8
  6. Malaysian liberal reformers, Anwar and Noor, risk imprisonment in order to push for a new interpretation of Islam.

    Frontline: Muslims    Chapter 13
