The Glory and the Power, by Martin Marty and R. Scott Appleby.  Beacon Press: Boston, 1992.   ISBN: 978-080701217-8. The campus book stores have copies.  Many more are available from private parties and used book sellers online -- if you go this route, make sure you get the right title, since there are a number of books with similar titles, and order your copy soon, though, since it will take a while to get it by mail.  You probably won't need this book until week three.
     Note--
The ISBN number and publisher for this book as listed on the ISU Course Finder is out of date.  Pay no attention to that number or publisher.  The correct information is found above.

Additional course readings will be posted online, either directly on the course Web site, or in Milner's electronic reserve.  Readings in the Milner reserve will be linked to the course Web site, but you can also access them from the Milner Web site by going to the Reserve lists.  Be prepared to PRINT copies of the readings, to bring to class!!  You will be told when printed copies will be needed for class.  If you want a complete packet of readings for your own reference after the course is over, save all the readings on paper or in digital form since the electronic reserve will go away once the course has ended.

Access to a good, college-level dictionary.  Not some namby-pamby paperback or free dictionary that comes with an old word processing software package.  (People who write about religion like to use special words and many weak dictionaries omit these or can't define them well.)  Be willing to stop and use a dictionary when needed!
