Instructions for getting started on research topic

Because your interests do not match up very well, it won't work well to try to get everyone on the same topic, but because your interests match up well enough in clusters of students, it is possible to get everyone working on a topic that is their first choice and still have the class divided up into groups all of which are about the same size.

Look below to find your name to see what group you are in.

On Wednesday in class the groups will get somewhat organized. In order to do this, it is necessary that everyone prepare for class by doing a little background research on the topic area for their group. This should not be specialized research on some narrow aspect of the topic area, but rather it should be as broad as possible.

bulletMaybe find a couple of easy to read magazine articles online that give a broad account of some of the issues.
bulletTry out your skills at using a general database from Milner.
bulletOr, maybe find a recent general book that deals with your topic, and look through it a little to get an idea of some of the questions people are thinking about.

Your aim is to know enough on Wednesday to be able to help figure out what specific research questions your group might try to answer. Ideally, each group will then be able to begin thinking about how to divide up the work.
