These are the course activities for the second half of the term.

 

The remark made at the beginning of the schedule still applies: the topical divisions found here are not sharp ones.  Activities overlap between divisions.

Mon. 10/25 We decided to have class in Milner Library 164D again on Monday.  We will work on the work sheets turned in on Friday, since we didn't get to those on Friday.  If you didn't do the work sheet for Friday, do it and bring on Monday.  The whole idea of the work sheet is to try to figure out how you would approach research starting from just a general topic idea.  If you get stuck, make a note of why you got stuck. n/a
Send any last-minute research topic suggestions by Friday night (10/22 -- last Friday, not next Friday).  Sunday or Monday, click here to see what topics people are interested in, because this is your chance to express interest in what you want to work on via an online form.  People who do not respond by Monday class time will be assigned at random to a topic.  Everyone should do this, even those who think they already have a topic deal. n/a

Turn in a research report consisting of 1) a tentative specific research question you are working on, 2) the title and call number of one book that might work, including a summary of what the book is about, 3) bibliographic information for and a summary of two journal articles that might work, and 4) a brief statement of any difficulties you are running into. Sun. 10/31 Daylight Savings Time ends early Sunday morning.  Set clocks back one hour, or you will be an hour early for everything.  Happy Halloween!  
Mon. 11/1 "What's the Reason?" material on arguments that generalize from a sample, pp. 194 - 199.  Write answers to Exercises 1 through 3 and 6, pp. 210 - 211. Mon. 11/1
Find a news story (perhaps online) about an opinion poll regarding the Presidential election.  Print and bring to class.  Think about how the text material assigned above applies to it. n/a

Examine the ISU enrollment statistics found here.  Make a list of those departments that are most out of line with the overall 58/42 female/male enrollment ratio at ISU. Bring the list to class.  Think of hypotheses to explain what causes the ratios in some departments are so different. n/a

Write a paragraph describing some of the main advantages that come with having pretty definite sex roles enforced by social pressure, and another paragraph describing some of the main disadvantages.  Look at the end of Wilson's article for some ideas. Mon. 11/15

Thanksgiving Break
