Anthropology 382
Senior Thesis in Anthropology
Dr James M. Skibo

Welcome to Senior Thesis, the capstone course in our curriculum. This is where you actually get to use the anthropological knowledge and skills you have been acquiring over the past several years. The idea is simple. You pick a topic, research it, and write it up for publication.  What this boils down to is writing up some more or less original ideas about people and the ways they live.
How do you begin? What's the first step? What comes next? These are the kinds of questions this course addresses. Its purpose is to walk you through the production of a piece of anthropology. Consider it a how-to course. I show you how to turn knowledge into a professional paper and keep you informed (see orientation) You bring the knowledge (from your own fieldwork, lab experience, data set, library research, etc.) and craft the final product. It is a step-by-step, week-by-week process. It involves me in the nuts-and-bolts process of paper production. It is my job to supervise your work and urge on your progress. The thesis also involves an advisor (often referred to as a mentor), an expert of your own choosing, with whom you will consult regularly about the content and organization of your work.
Get a good advisor i.e., someone who will take an interest in your work and knows a lot about the topic. Be aware of the course requirements. Stay with the program. Complete each step on Schedule, and you will be celebrating a major accomplishment along with the rest of us at the end of the semester.
