Grenoble, France
Why Grenoble?
- You
will be
immersed in French language and culture for six weeks!
- You
will visit Paris, Versailles and some châteaux in the Loire Valley
during your first week in France.
- You'll
participate in a four-week program of study at Stendhal University in the city of
Grenoble located in the beautiful French Alps.
The program is specifically designed for students learning French as
a foreign language.
- You
will study in small classes with international students from many
countries of the world.
- Your
ability to speak and understand French
will improve substantially.
- You
will make excursions to other areas such as Chamonix-Mont Blanc,
Avignon, the French Riviera, and Geneva, Switzerland.
- You'll
receive 6 ISU credits applicable to your major or minor in French.
- You'll

What's it
like?
- A
few days before classes, you arrive in Grenoble and begin to explore the
city and campus.
- You
move in to the house of your host family or in to a dorm with other international
students.
- Each
day, you take some of your meals with your family, or cook in your dorm, or
eat at a restaurant universitaire or other restaurant of your choice.
- On
the first Monday of classes, you take a placement exam and you will be placed
in a class with students who share your level of French.
- During
the week, each morning for two hours you will attend small
classes taught by French instructors to
improve your written and spoken French.
You will also choose
two hours of additional classes each morning to increase your
knowledge in specific areas, including
French literature, civilization, history, cinema, the arts, politics and
economy, business language, etc.
- In
the afternoon,
you are free to participate in the many activities sponsored by the
university:
o
sports
activities: hiking in the
mountains, playing tennis, soccer, or volleyball, rock climbing, canoeing,
kayaking…
o
cultural
activities and entertainment: discovery
of French songs / singing, theatre Festival of European Theatre, visits to
museums in Grenoble and the surrounding area…
- In
the evenings,
there are many university-sponsored activities available:
o
a Soirée
Internationale, with students from many countries performing
o
cinema with international
films
o
soirées
dansantes
o
wine
and cheese tasting
o
classes
in French cooking
- Or
you might spend the afternoon or evening in a café talking with new
friends.
- On weekends
you can choose between part-day,
full-day or weekend-long excursions organized by the university:
o
visit
Annecy, a beautiful city of canals and flowers
o
visit Lyon
with its Gallo-Roman artifacts and the Renaissance buildings of Vieux Lyon
o
visit Avignon
during its famous festival and Orange’s
ancient Roman arch and theater
o
visit Chartreuse,
including the caves where the monks make the famous liqueur
o
visit the Château
de Vizille and the Museum
of the Revolution
o
visit Chamonix
and Mont Blanc with
spectacular views of the Alps
o
visit Geneva
and Lausanne in nearby
Switzerland
o
visit Marseille’s
Vieux Port and le château d’If (le
Comte de Monte-Christo)
o
visit Nice
and la Côte d’Azur along
the Mediterranean
- Or
you can relax and do whatever you wish during your free time.
What are the
prerequisites?
- French
112, undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or graduate GPA of 3.0
