WRITE 10 SENTENCES ABOUT YOUR HOMETOWN AND HIGH SCHOOL. Use the relative pronouns indicated. Remember, relative pronouns generally follow an antecedent noun, clause, or "ce." Relative pronouns change according to grammatical function (subject, direct object, object of a preposition) that the antecedent plays in the following clause. You can also model your sentences on the examples in the reviews.
Table I Verbs followed by the preposition à
1. and 2. Write two sentences about your hometown, the first using the relative pronoun à + laquelle, auxquels etc., and the second using the relative pronoun "à + qui." You may use one of the verbs from Table I. Structure: Clause with noun + relative pronoun + clause. (For review, see Relative Pronouns II, I A. and B.) Examples: La prison à laquelle je fais allusion se trouve près de la maison de mes parents. Je n'aimais pas les garçons à qui je fais allusion.

3. Write a sentence about one of your high school teachers using an indefinite relative pronoun with the preposition à: ce à quoi, à quoi. You will need to choose a verb in Table I that can be followed by "à qqch." Model: "I don't know what he/she...." (See Review of Relative Pronouns II, I B 2.) Structure: Clause + relative pronoun + clause.
Example: On se demande à quoi mon professeur pensait quand il se tenait devant la classe.

4. Write a sentence about your hometown using a relative pronoun and a verb using the preposition de. You may use one of the verbs from Table II.
Example: On se réunissait à McDonalds, dont tous les jeunes gens parlaient.

5. and 6. Choose a verb from Table III and write two sentences, the first about a friend or friends in high school, the second about a place or thing in your home town. Both must include a relative pronoun. Structure: antecedent + relative pronoun + clause. (See Relative Pronouns II, II A. Examples: J'aimais surtout la fille avec qui je sortais à cette époque. Je me souviens du lycée devant lequel nous nous mettions pour fumer. 5.

8. Write a sentence about a place in or near your high school using a relative pronoun of place and one of the verbs in Table IV.
Structure: place + relative pronoun + clause. (See Relative Pronouns II, II B.)
Example: En allant à l'école, nous passions par un parc où (dans lequel) nous nous sommes assis pendant un moment.
9. Write two sentences. In the first make a statement about a group of people in high school. In the second use a relative pronoun to say "the one that." Use one of the verbs from Tables I, II, or III (See Relative Pronouns II, II A. 3.)
Example: J'avais beaucoup d'amis. Celui que je préférais était Pierre.
10. Write a sentence about your family with an indefinite relative pronoun (ce qui, ce que, ce dont, etc.). Use one of the verbs taking a direct object. (Click for some verbs taking a direct object).
Example: Ce que je ne pouvais tolérer, c'était le silence de mon père.
