COURSE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:

The goal of Advanced French Grammar is to improve students’ understanding of the rules of French grammar and to increase their ability to express themselves accurately and comprehensibly through the use of these rules in controlled and open exercises.

Advanced French Grammar provides a deeper understanding of the basic principles guiding French grammar, in part by introducing new grammar rules, but primarily by reviewing and explaining in depth the grammar rules that were learned on the 100 level and reinforced in FR 213 (Advanced Techniques in Written French) and FR 220 (Advanced French Reading and Vocabulary Skills).  The course focuses on the advanced grammar necessary to read, write, and speak in a 300-level course.

Advanced French Grammar teaches students to use grammatical knowledge practically and critically by having them complete and analyze daily grammar exercises in the book and on the web and by administering periodic quizzes and exams.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Students will be responsible for completing, before coming to class all "Application immédiate" written exercises in Grammaire française.   Web exercises are due Saturday midnight of the week in which they are assigned. When possible do the assigned web exercises ("Mallard") before the class for which they are assigned.  Sometimes I will suggest that you put them off until after the class explanation.

a) "Application immédiate" exercises should first be done without referring to the answer key, then corrected by means of the answer key   (page of answer key given at end of exercise). After completing all questions in each written exercise, circle incorrect answers and write the correct answer in the column. If you write your answers on a separate piece of paper, you must write the entire sentence, not just the word to fill in the blank, and you must circle and correct your incorrect answers.

During quizzes and exams, I will verify that you are doing and correcting the exercises, so you must bring your exercises to all quizzes and exams.

b) For web exercises, fill in the boxes or click on the correct multiple choice answer.  After completing all answers, click on the submit button at the end of the quiz to see answers, then correct your answers by using BACK button. See detailed instructions below. Web exercises not submitted by Saturday midnight of the week for which they are assigned will be docked 20%.  Some should

2) A class absence will mean a 0 for the day's class participation grade unless the student provides a note from a doctor. Class attendance is essential to succeed in this course! Students who miss class explanations and exercises consistently score lower than those who do not.

3) If absent, you are responsible for all assignments, including those made in the class missed (e-mail me or ask a fellow student if additional assignments were made).

4) In class, take notes. I will emphasize in class those grammar points that you most need to know and that will be quizzed and tested.

5) Prepare for three quizzes, two exams, and a comprehensive final exam.   There will also be three review quizzes (before the exams) and one review exam (Exam III, before the final)

6) Learn all verb conjugations in Bescherelle as assigned and do all conjugation web exercises before the day assigned. You must pass the 250 conjugation verb test (minimum 70%) by the end of the semester to pass the course. You will take the exam on your own time (max 1 hour 15 minutes). You must make an appointment with me.

MALLARD WEB EXERCISES

In order to do web exercises:
1) go to my homepage (http://lilt.ilstu.edu/jhreid/) and click on "235 French Grammar";
2) click on "Mallard Exercises";
3) fill in your user ID (same as for e-mail), then your password, for235, which you may change;
4) on your personalized Mallard page, click on "Lessons";
5) click on assigned group of web exercises;
6) do all grammar exercises in each quiz relatively quickly, without reviewing the on-line grammar explanations or consulting Bescherelle;
7) click on "Submit" button;
8) on the corrections page, try to figure out why specific answers are marked wrong;
9) click on Netscape "Return" button, which will take you back to the original exercises. Correct the exercises marked wrong (You can go back and forth between the exercises and correction page with "Return" and "Forward" buttons).
10) if you do not understand why the answer is wrong use "Hint" button (if there is one) the "Review" button (which will take you to the relevant part of the grammar explanations) or Bescherelle.
11) after you correct exercises, submit for grading again.
12) you may continue this process as often as you like. During different computer sessions, you need to redo all exercises, including the ones you got previously correct. Your highest grade, before the deadline, will automatically come to me and be recorded on the day of the deadline. At the end of the course, I will assign you either the score you achieved by the deadline or 80% of your score done after the deadline, whichever is highest.
13) you can continue using the exercises for review after the deadline.

Additional exercises can be found on the Grammar Homepage. They are translation exercises, which I will correct when I have time and return to you by e-mail. You will receive extra credit if you do any of these exercises well by the end of the semester.

Students

Any person admitted to the University who is currently enrolled for University academic credit shall be defined as a student.

Section 1. Student Rights and Responsibilities

A. Student Rights

Among the goals of the University are the transmission of knowledge, the pursuit of truth, the development of its members, and improvement of the general well-being of society. Academic freedom in the form of freedom of inquiry and freedom of expression is indispensable to the attainment of these goals. As members of the academic community, students should be encouraged to develop the capacity for critical judgment and to engage in a sustained and independent search for truth. The standards of academic freedom of students detailed in this article are essential to any community of scholars. Student freedom to learn and faculty freedom to teach are inseparable facets of academic freedom. The freedom to learn depends upon appropriate opportunities and conditions in the classroom, on the campus, and in the larger community. University students are expected to exercise their freedom with responsibility, but the responsibility to secure and respect students' freedom to learn is shared by all members of the University community.

 

B. Student Responsibilities

The academic community requires a system of order to support the educational process which is the purpose of the University.

Preservation of the system of order depends on the individuals who make up the group. Implicit in the community's recognition of the rights of students is their obligation to accept their responsibilities toward the community.

1. The primary responsibility of students is to advance their own education.

2. The obligation of students to fellow students requires conduct which shows respect for the opinions and rights of all. In seeking to effect change, students rely on reasoned argument and utilize procedures which do not interfere with the opportunity of other students to pursue their education.

3. Students' responsibilities toward their instructors include the obligation to fulfill assignments, to participate in discussion and other activities, to increase their scholarly competence in the discipline being studied, and to work creatively and independently. Through fairness and courtesy, they invite respect for themselves and the entire student community.

4. The obligation of students to the University is to be effective participants in the teaching-learning process. They observe the rules of the University, yet guard their right to criticize. They speak or act on their own behalf, not as a representative of the University. They accept their share of responsibility for the University governance.

5. The responsibility of students to the community beyond the University is to be good citizens. While recognizing that complying with laws and rules cannot of itself make one good, students should obey national, state, and local laws. If the processes of the law have been exhausted without achieving substantial justice, then those who have violated the law in the name of justice must be prepared to accept the consequence of their violation.
