French-Speaking Quebec City

 

Why Quebec City?

When?

  • Two 5-week summer sessions:
    • Mid-May to Mid-June
    • Mid-July to Mid-August

What's it like?  

  • The weekend before classes, you arrive on the beautiful campus of Laval University
  • You move in to the house of your host family or a dorm
  • Each day, you take some of your meals with your family, or cook in your dorm, or go to a a French, Québecois, or fast food restaurant
  • All students sign a contract to speak only French inside and outside of class
  • On the first Monday of classes, you take a placement exam and you will be placed in a class with students on the same level of French
    • élémentaire
    • intermédiaire I, II, or III (most students will place in Intermédiaire II or III)
    • avancé
    • supérieur
  • During the week, each morning for four hours, you will attend small classes taught by Francophone instructors who emphasize speaking and oral comprehension
  • In the afternoon, you will choose between group activities led by Francophone organizers:
    • workshops:  ceramics, sports, Québecois folksongs, French cooking, dancing, student newspaper, acting, chorale, bicycling, and more
    • coffee hours on Tuesdays with the other students at your language level
    • mini-excursions on Thursdays and Fridays

 

  • In the evenings, activities available include:
    • movies, plays, concerts
    • dinner in French and Francophone restaurants with Francophone organizers
    • a Soirée Internationale, with students from many countries performing
  • Or you can:
    • spend the evening in a café or go shopping in the “great” nearby malls
    • visit Vieux Québec with its historic cites, innumerable French and Québecois restaurants, cafés, and "amazing" places to dance (15 minutes by bus).
  • On Saturdays, you can go on full-day or part-day excursions led by Francophone organizers:
    • visit historical sites like Ile d'Orléans and Grosse Ile.
    • rafting
    • horseback riding
    • see the whales at the mouth of the St. Laurence River
    • visit Vieux Québec or take a bus or drive to Montréal (2 hours) and spend the weekend
    • play sports
  • On Sundays, you're free to do what you wish 
  • During the July/August session attend the 10-day Festival d'été de Québec
