COURSE GOALS:

1.  Continue development of speaking and listening skills.  With the exception of some grammar discussions, French only will be used in class.  Fluency, grammatical correctness, listening skills, and use of a diverse vocabulary will be increased through oral and listening exercises, discussions with the professor, and small group work.  There will be mid-term and final oral exams.

2.  Increase reading and writing skills.  All textbook materials except grammar explanations are in French.  Each chapter includes substantial reading passages that you will be encouraged to interpret intelligently.  We will also read a short novel, L'Etranger, by Albert Camus. Writing assignments will progress from 70 words to 350 words (1 1/2 pages).

3.  Build Vocabulary.  Vocabulary listed at beginning and end of chapter, as well as presented throughout the chapter, will be memorized.  Workbook and Lab exercises will help you build the habit of using this vocabulary in your writing and speaking.

5.  Augment knowledge of customs and cultural attitudes in French and francophone societies and cultures.  Cultural dialogues, presentations, images, and readings will be read and interpreted.
