Prerequisites:
French 115 or 4 years of strong high school French training

Course Goals:
1.  Increased grammatical accuracy in in speaking and writing, with an emphasis on
     complex sentences.
We will start in the middle of Chapter 6 and complete the material presented in Ouvertures.

your grammar on the next composition. You will also read a French novel, L'Etranger by Albert Camus.  You will
answer and turn in  Critical Reading guides on all reading.  This reading will be difficult at first, but you will become
more and more proficient as time goes by..

4.  Vocabulary building.  Students will memorize and use, in both speaking and writing, vocabulary in the textbook
     and the novel.

5.  Increased knowledge of customs and cultural attitudes in French and francophone societies.

Course Work and Requirements

Participation, Preparation, and Attendance:
Learning a language requires careful preparation, active participation, self-correction, and constant revision of the rules.  The following policies are designed to encourage and reward actions that will increase your learning.

Participation will be graded on a daily basis on a scale of 0-10.  The evaluations will take into account:

           1.  the consistency with which you avoid English and speak French in class, the grammatical
correctness of your speech and writing, your attempts to correct your mistakes, and the
thoughtfulness of the ideas you express.
           2.  preparation for and focus on class activities.  Coming to class prepared, remaining on task and
encouraging others to do so, participating in and completing all tasks assigned for in-class
                activities.
                a. If you are present in class you will receive a grade from 4-10 for class preparation and
participation, depending upon your completing the homework intelligently before class and
                participating intelligently in class.
                b. If you are not present you will receive a grade of 0.

Daily assignments from Ouvertures.  You should:

  1. read over and over the grammar explanations, dialogue, or text until you understand them.

  2. respond orally or in writing to all questions in the exercises following the grammar explanation..

  3. verify or correct your answers by referring back to explanations, dialogue, or text.

  4. look up, in a French/English dictionary, all words whose meaning is necessary to understand a sentence. The dictionary at the end of Ouvertures will not suffice.  You must buy a dictionary.

Workbook.  There will be daily assignments in the workbook, in addition to assignments from the textbook.

Use the Workbook correctly and constructively!
    1. Write the answers to all exercises, revise your answers by referring, when applicable, to the grammar explanations
         in the textbook;
    2.  Then correct your revised answers by referring to the answer key at the end of the workbook.  Circle (do not
cross out) incorrect answers and write correct answers above or in the margin.
    3. You should bring the Workbook to class every day.  Sometimes we will go over the exercises in class.  I may
collect some exercises and grade them.
Tun in your workbook at least 2 classes before all Chapter Quizzes.   While you are taking the quiz, I will
verify that you have carefully completed and corrected all exercises.

Compréhension auditive

You will be responsible for completing the entire Compréhension auditive sections of chapters 7-9.  You will need the
Student Audio CD that should have been included in your copy of Ouvertures.  If you do not have a copy, please
try to find someone who has one that you can borrow.  I will also make a copy available at the desk in the 233a
     Foreign Languages laboratory.

Compositions.  You will be assigned 3 compositions, each with 2 drafts, during the semester.
    1.  They are to be done on a word processor with all French accents typed in.
    2.  You are required to use the spell check to correct the spelling.  You may wish to save your paper on a disk in
Microsoft Word Format  and take your disk the computers in the Foreign Language Computer Labs (STV
233a), if you do not have a spell check on your computer.   DO NOT LEAVE THE SPELL CHECK
UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE BEFORE CLASS!
    3.  Put all drafts of your papers in a portfolio and hand them all in together every time you turn in a new
         draft.

Tests

  1. There will be a quiz after every chapter.  The quiz will cover all grammar and vocabulary in that chapter and all content from your readings of L'Etranger.  Your Critical Reading Guides for L'Etranger should help you prepare for the Quiz.

  2. There will be two exams, one on Chapters 6-8, the other on Chapters 9-10.  These will cover grammar, vocabulary, and readings.

  3. The Final Written Exam will cover the entire semester's work, with an emphasis on complex sentences.

  4. There will be midterm and final oral exams.  They will be taken in pairs.  You will receive a topic to be discussed before the exam, but the exam will not be limited to that topic.  The exams will take place outside of class.
