COURSE GOALS:
1. Continue development
of speaking and listening skills. With the exception of some grammar
discussions,
French only will be used in class. Fluency,
grammatical correctness, listening skills, and use of a diverse
vocabulary will be increased through oral and listening exercises, discussions with the
professor, and small group work.
There will be mid-term and final oral
exams.
2. Increase reading and writing skills. All textbook materials except grammar explanations are in French. Each chapter includes substantial reading passages that you will be encouraged to interpret intelligently. Writing assignments will progress from 70 words to 350 words (1 1/2 pages).
3. Build Vocabulary. Vocabulary listed at beginning and end of chapter, as well as presented throughout the chapter, will be memorized. Workbook and Lab exercises will help you build the habit of using this vocabulary in your writing and speaking.
5. Augment knowledge of customs and cultural attitudes in French and francophone societies and cultures. Cultural dialogues, presentations, images, and readings will be read and interpreted.
COURSE SCHEDULE
You must have a good pocket dictionary. Try the Larousse pocket.
You may also wish to use an online English/French or French/English dictionaries: http://www.wordreference.com/. Look for the correct translation among a list of translations.
I may adjust the schedule of classes according to the needs of the class. You are responsible for all changes in the syllabus, whether or not you are in class. I will add all changes to the on-line syllabus, so you should check it before preparing class if you were absent from the previous class.
Class dates are followed by the material covered that day and guidelines for preparing for class
Always look for on-line assignments and due dates when preparing for each class.
Most on-line workbook and lab assignments allow you three tries, unless they are true/false questions, where you will have one try. Read the material assigned before class, then try once the on-line assignments that allow you three tries. Then ask me questions in class in order to improve your results.
You may turn in an on-line assignment late, but 10% will be subtracted for every day that it is late.
