Families

The ISU chapter has built new homes for nine different families, one each year since 1995. Each of the families' homes were built almost entirely by the hands of ISU and IWU students and faculty volunteers. Each of the families residing in the homes also spent a total of 500 hours building their own home and helping to build the other ISU Habitat homes.

Past Families

The families ISU has built homes with are The Caldwell Family (1996), The Wolfe Family (1997), The Owens Family (1998), The Schult Family (1999), The Sanchez Family (2000), The Ernst Family (2001)  The Mack Family (2002).  Tita McNeil  (2003).  Walks the West Wind  (2004). The Spicer Family (2005). This year's (2005-06) homeowner will be The Gabor Family.

Prospective Families

Prospective homeowners must meet three criteria. The family is currently living in inadequate, unsafe, or overcrowded quarters, or in temporary housing. Habitat follows the Department of Housing and Urban Development's very low income guidelines to determine eligibility for selection. The family must also be able to pay back an interest-free loan. Applicants exhibit their willingness to partner by committing to:

-Work 500 hours on the houses of other Habitat families, on their own house, and on other Habitat projects.
-Make a 500 dollar down payment.
-Attend workshops on home maintenance and money management.

Prospective applicants attend a family information meeting in which they learn what it means to partner with Habitat. Applications for Selection are available at the meeting. For more information on building a home with Habitat please contact McLean County Habitat.
