LAB 1: Very Simple Web Page Instructions
Step 1 Map the website drive
{note: if you are not in the Schreoder labs, you
may have to map your network drive before saving your files: From
the Windows Start button go to:
Programs | Internet Tools 2004 | Utilities | Map network drive
if you have the newest version of ITOOLS use:
Programs | Internet Tools 2007 | Drivemap utility
and map the datastore01\Website drive (you will have to select the drive
and enter your ulid and password). You should also map your Home
drive.
Go to "My Computer" and create a new folder "pos138" (no
caps). This folder will contain all your coursework.
Step 2. Open Microsoft Word.
- File | Open | New web page
(enter some text, e.g., your name)
Step 3. Save the web page
- File | Save as web page
- save the file in the pos138 folder
(Save your main home page with the file
name welcome.htm -- check the "save as file
type" box: do not save this page a "single file web page")
You (and anyone else) may now view your
web page by entering your web address:
http://www.ilstu.edu/~ulid/pos138
<= (ulid is your ulid)
or
http://www.ilstu.edu/~ulid/pos138/welcome.htm
(Note: "welcome.htm" is a default name,
you do not need to type the full address)

- Homework 3:
n excel

completed next to the link to the file, e.g.,

Step 8. Check to make sure it all worked.
-
Close and save all your files.
-
Save backup copies on your H: drive,
-
Go to the
course
labcheck page
-
Click on your web address.
-
Make sure the link to your term paper and homework
file works.
Notes:
1. Any files that you save on your website drive may be viewed by anyone
using the internet, and you can create links on one page that refer to other
pages on you website.
You can also create new folders on your website. For example the
address:
http://www.ilstu.edu/~ulid/pictures/myprom.jpg
refers to an image file "myprom.jpg" in the folder "pictures".
2. Use Format | Theme to select a style for your page
3. Use tables (with no borders) to arrange images and text on your
page.
4. Placing your full email address on a website will invite all
sorts of junk mail. It is best if you just use your ulid on the "mailto:"
link, without the "@ilstu.edu".
