Peer
Counselor Workshops
Peer Counselors present a variety of workshops designed especially for Illinois State University students. The workshops have been developed and designed by SCS peer counselors and staff.
All workshops typically last
50 minutes, although some can be shortened to accommodate request
needs. The workshops are usually
interactive and action oriented.
Handouts and other resource materials are provided.
Workshops currently
available:
1. Acquaintance Rape
·
Learn
about the state of Illinois legal definition of sexual assault and understand
important legal terms, such as force, consent, etc.
·
This
program involves dramatic scenes performed by members of the Guerrilla Theatre
Troupe.
2. Addictions (Maintaining a healthy
balance in your life)
·
Define
what addictions are and how to identify them.
·
Focuses
on maintaining a healthy balance in one’s life.
·
Looks
at various topics like gambling, the internet, work, etc.
3. Body Image
·
Understand
society’s messages about weight and beauty and how they affect our own body
image.
·
Become
aware of how you can improve your own body image. (This workshop includes a slide presentation and a dramatic
skit.)
4. Choosing a Major *
·
Learn
about yourself, the world of work and the decision making process.
·
Explore
various majors and careers.
5. Diversity *
·
Define
diversity. How does it affect your
life?
·
Understand
some of your own personal stereotypes and how to change them.
6. Interviewing
Skills *
·
How
do I manage interview apprehension?
·
What
questions might be asked at an interview?
·
Acquaint
yourself with the basic skills of interviewing.
7. Relationships *
·
What
makes a relationship healthy or unhealthy?
·
Learn
strategies for improving relationships in your life.
8. Resume
Writing *
·
What
are the different types of resumes and sections within a resume.
·
What
are the Do’s and Don’ts of effective resumes.
9. Self-Esteem
·
What
is self-esteem and how is it developed?
·
Understand
new ways to develop and increase your self-esteem in the future.
10. Stress Management
*
·
What
is stress and how does your body respond to it?
·
Assess
stress’s impact on your own life.
·
Learn
and practice stress management skills or techniques such as guided imagery and
relaxation.
11. Time Management *
·
Learn
methods of scheduling or charting time.
·
Discuss
various tips or suggestions for effective time management.
All
workshops with an “*” after the title are available at a week’s notice. All other workshops will require more
advance notice for preparation. Workshops
on “Conflict Management” and “Money management” will also be available with at
least 2 week’s notice.
To request a workshop, the
requesting party must:

Determine a preferred date,
time, length, and location for the workshop.
·
Meet requirement of 10
participants
·
Find a location for the
workshop and be responsible for publicity and advertising.
·
Provide necessary equipment,
i.e. overhead, slide projector, chalkboard
·
