7/23/02: Gender and Athletics

Discussion: The data are relevant to the debates over Title IX gender equity in athletics.  Here we see evidence of either gender discrimination against women in the nation's high schools or evidence that women are less inclined to participate in sports as they get older.  If it is the first, the data support efforts to more rigorously enforce Title IX at the high school level; if the latter, it supports claims that College gender-proportionality interpretations of Title IX are unfair to male athletes.
