This one-week institute focuses on content in the American Revolution and Constitutional periods organized around the Vital Theme and Narrative of history - Values, Beliefs, Political Ideas, and Institutions. Historians Pauline Maier and David McCullough present seminal ideas and integrate the use of primary sources in the teaching of American history. Master teachers Betty Franks, Nancy Taylor, and Phil Nicolosi model practical classroom teaching strategies using primary sources. Academic Director Frederick D. Drake works with teachers to identify core documents (First-Order) and Second-/and Third-Order documents. Teachers use First-/Second-/and Third-Order documents in a historical context. They help their students think historically with the use of Primary Source Analysis Guides. Teachers work together in research teams to create a collection of core documents and Second-/and Third-Order documents.
