Course Reading

For this semester please read a chapter, "Civic Intelligence and Liberal Intelligence in the History Education of Social Studies Teachers and Students." A colleague and I wrote the chapter that will be coming out toward the end of January 2002 in a book, Principles and Practices of Democracy in the Education of Social Studies Teachers. You are receiving the pageproofs rather than the final copy that will appear in the book. So there are some errors. However, there are some ideas that hopefully you will see in the chapter. First, we need more deliberative discussion rather than a rush to judgment that the decision-making model of teaching encourages. Second, that we need core documents for discussion and that our discussions should ask students to suspend judgments.

I have given the reading to Interns and when you have a chance please discuss them. Also, I would appreciate your feedback.

During the Mentoring experience, please do the following:

1. Observe your Intern teaching some or all of one or more class sessions. Please keep in mind that your Intern feels ready to teach and your feedback will be most helpful.

2. Discuss with your Intern being a reflective practitioner and discuss any or all of the readings above with your Intern.

3. Complete the Mentor Assessment form at the conclusion of the last teaching session with your Intern.

4. Contact your Intern at least twice during your Intern's student teaching experience.

5. Lead the Exit Interview Panel when your Intern returns during the last week of the Professional Development Semester.

This course is worth one hour of graduate credit and may be taken for a maximum of three graduate credit hours. Registration for the course should be completed within two weeks of the semester (forms to be distributed), that is by February 7, 2002. The Department of History provides a tuition waiver of approximately $112. As a mentor receiving graduate credit you are responsible for paying an off-campus registration fee of $30.

Course Grades

Final grades are determined by the completion of the above assignments.

"There is an aesthetic dimension to everything. Every school environment, every teaching act, every setting you create to spend time in, enhances or diminishes the quality of life. Whether you're teaching science or art, the challenge is to make it beautiful."

Eliot Eisner

"To reflect is to look back over what has been done so as to extract the net meanings which are the capital stock for intelligent dealing with further experiences. It is the heart of intellectual organization and of the disciplined mind."

John Dewey

"Style . . . is the last acquirement of the educated mind; it is also the most useful. It pervades the whole being . . . the artisan with a sense for style prefers good work. Style is the ultimate morality of mind."

Alfred North Whitehead
