Standards.
Numerous
national and state groups have established speaking, listening, and media
literacy standards for students and teachers. Standards are statements
of competencies that need to be mastered prior to certification or moving
to the next performance level. The most common categories of competencies
are: knowledge, behaviors, and dispositions.

Standards become especially
important as we create assessments. If we accept the concept of meeting
standards, then we need to assess students to see if they have met that
standard. The SLAP rubrics found on this site are standards-based assessments.
